Arrival in Chicago for T3 Conference

I arrived in Chicago for Texas Instruments’ T3 convention a few hours ago and immediately headed off to a very nice VIP cocktail hour. Of course, Mayim Bialik was in attendance, and I did have an opportunity to briefly exchange pleasantries. As you can imagine, just about everyone wants to talk to her, so she’s very much in demand. I will have an opportunity to do a short interview with her tomorrow, and I’m looking forward to asking her more about her decision to become a spokesperson for Texas Instruments and what she hopes to accomplish via that partnership.

Happy Birthday, TI-Nspire CX

The TI-Nspire CX is an amazing but still underused tool for math educators. If you didn’t realize it, this past Saturday marked the one year anniversary of the public announcement of the TI-Nspire CX, Texas Instruments’ full color graphing calculator. For those of you just learning about it, you might enjoy reading my TI-Nspire CX review, or even the story where I broke the announcement of the TI-Nspire CX right here on Tech Powered Math.

TI-Nspire Riemann Sums

In preparation for AP Calculus the other day, I was struggling with how to get the TI-Nspire to work Riemann sums as easily as the TI-84 does, since we typically use a program on the 84. After some time, I had come to the conclusion I’d either have to write a program myself or just accept the fact that it wouldn’t be as simple as it is with the TI-84.

Top 6 Texas Instruments Calculator Hacks of All Time

UPDATE: A couple of days after this post originally went up, I was made aware of a new hack that deserved inclusion on this list, expanding it to a top 6. Probably every single student (and just about every teacher) who has picked up a graphing calculator has asked themselves how far the technology can be pushed. What are the limits of a graphing calculator? Without much encouragement from Texas Instruments (actually quite the opposite), a dedicated hacker community has developed over the last few decades to attempt to answer this question.

TI-Nspire Algebra Formulas Document

This TI-Nspire document has a number of formulas that are useful for algebra. In it you will find formulas for exponents, factoring, the equation of a line, and general formulas such as midpoint, distance, and slope. As with all TI-Nspire documents, it will work on any version of the calculator including TI-Nspire grayscale or CX and TI-Nspire CAS or non-CAS. If you find this document to be useful, be sure to like it on Facebook.

Red Ribbon Week TI-Nspire Door

So if you haven’t heard, it’s Red Ribbon Week, which is a time for students to celebrate a drug free lifestyle. It’s observed at many high schools across America, including the one I work at. For 2011, the theme of Red Ribbon is “Free to Be Drug Free.” Part of Red Ribbon Week at our school is a door decorating contest. With no prompting from me, my 5th hour Pre-Calculus class decided to turn the door into a TI-Nspire CX.

TI-Nspire Trig Formulas Document

The first formula sheet document I am releasing for the TI-Nspire is one for trigonometry formulas. There are quite a few trig identities for students to memorize, so I hope this will serve as a good reference for you. This file will work for any up-to-date version of the TI-Nspire, including CAS or non-CAS, CX or grayscale. The table of contents follows below. Click here to get my TI-Nspire Trig Formulas Document.

TI-Nspire Formula Documents

Over the next few weeks, I’m going to be releasing a series of TI-Nspire formula “cheat sheets.” Of course, cheat sheet is just a nickname for this kind of document, don’t actually use them to cheat. Having the formulas on your graphing calculator can serve as a very valuable study guide when you are either trying to memorize the formulas or to use as a reference when working on practice problems.

TI-Nspire Navigator for Networked Computers Announced

Texas Instruments has just announced a major update to their TI-Nspire Navigator system to allow Navigator to work with schools in a one-to-one computing environment. As was the case with the TI-Nspire CX, Texas Instruments was willing to fill me in on the details of the new Navigator system prior to today’s press release. Last Friday, TI-Nspire captain Mark Fry talked with me what the new Navigator system is capable of.

Texas Instruments Announces Free Webinars for Fall 2011

Earlier this week, Texas Instruments announced a fall series of free webinars for educators. The series is a part of their T3 program (Teachers Teaching with Technology). The webinars are about an hour long each and are going to be available on demand after their original broadcast. You can get a certificate of attendance that might be applicable towards professional development hours in some states. Looking at the schedule of T3 Webinars, Texas Instruments continues to make the drive towards moving from the TI-84 platform to the TI-Nspire platform.
