Headed to Honduras

This is a very unusual post for Tech Powered Math, but I’m going to be “off the grid” for a couple of weeks. I want to explain why because I’ll be slower than usual at responding to emails, Tweets, etc. In a few days, I’ll be flying from St. Louis to Honduras as part of a mission trip with my church here in Peoria, Imago Dei Church. We are joining up with a ministry that is based permanently in La Esperanza, Honduras called Mercy International.

Arrival in Chicago for T3 Conference

I arrived in Chicago for Texas Instruments’ T3 convention a few hours ago and immediately headed off to a very nice VIP cocktail hour. Of course, Mayim Bialik was in attendance, and I did have an opportunity to briefly exchange pleasantries. As you can imagine, just about everyone wants to talk to her, so she’s very much in demand. I will have an opportunity to do a short interview with her tomorrow, and I’m looking forward to asking her more about her decision to become a spokesperson for Texas Instruments and what she hopes to accomplish via that partnership.

A last minute scheduling change means that I will be in Chicago for Texas Instruments’ T3 International Conference this weekend. While I don’t know all that I’ll be doing at the conference, my contacts at TI have shared with me a couple of interesting items to report in advance of my arrival in Chicago. Big Bang Theory star Mayim Bialik First, TI has secured a major star to attend the conference.

Send a Graphing Valentine

Because nothing says “I Love You” like a graph, the guys over at A Better Calculator (Desmos) have developed a way for you to send a Valentine to your loved one via their online graphing calculator. I’ve already sent one off to my wife, who will no doubt laugh at what a dork I am (while probably melting just a little inside as well). It’s only here for a short time, so check it out here.

This week a new app company, Fingerprint Digital, has gone public with a series of educational apps targeted towards children between the ages of 3 and 8. Texas Instruments T3 Registration Opens

Texas Instruments has opened registration for their annual T3 International Conference. The conference dates are March 2-March 4, 2012. The conference will be held at the Hyatt Regency in Chicago. T3 conferences feature professional development on the latest Texas Instruments technology from the TI-Nspire CX to the TI-Voyage 200. Having attended the T3 International Conference back in 2007, I can tell you that it’s a first class event. You get to hear from world class speakers, who share all kinds of ideas about how to utilize technology in the classroom.

A Sad Farewell to Steve Jobs

I was sitting in a church meeting on Wednesday night when I received a jarring text from my wife with the news that Apple founder Steve Jobs had died. From a 3rd grader using an Apple IIe to a teacher using an iPad 2, the company Jobs founded has had a profound impact on my educational experience. While I’m not an Apple fanboy, I am certainly an Apple admirer, and I have especially admired what Jobs did with with his time at Apple.

TI-Nspire Navigator for Networked Computers Announced

Texas Instruments has just announced a major update to their TI-Nspire Navigator system to allow Navigator to work with schools in a one-to-one computing environment. As was the case with the TI-Nspire CX, Texas Instruments was willing to fill me in on the details of the new Navigator system prior to today’s press release. Last Friday, TI-Nspire captain Mark Fry talked with me what the new Navigator system is capable of.

Supposed TI-36X Pro Error

Got an uncharacteristic number of hits on the site yesterday for the search “TI-36X Pro” yesterday and couldn’t figure out why until I saw a post on another site and a Youtube video about a “bug” in the TI-36X Pro. I’m not going to post the links to those sites in part because the author of the complaint has needlessly chosen to remain anonymous and because the article itself never explains the error and is confusing a lot of people.

MATHCOUNTS Announces Reel Math Challenge

MATHCOUNTS, a foundation best known for their nationwide popular middle school math contests, has announced the start of a new math challenge for students. The new contest, known as the Reel Math Challenge, is quite different from traditional math contests, which typically focus on written or oral exam questions. With the Reel Math Challenge, student teams of four create a math video designed around a problem. The video needs to teach viewers about the problem and demonstrate a real world application of the concept involved.
