Thoughts on Illinois’s Move From PARCC to SAT

If you missed the news the other day, my home state of Illinois is partially opting out of their 5-year contract with the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) test. While elementary grades will continue to give the test, high school students are done with it, and instead will receive the SAT as their free, state-mandated test. This leaves PARCC with only 8 states as full participants, not exactly the kind of number you’d like to see for a “national consortium.

The below map can be used to explore ACT scores by state from 2004-2015 for all 50 US states across all subscores, composite scores, as well as percentage of students tested in a given state. Update on PARCC Calculator Policy

I’ve really made no secret of the fact that I have my doubts about the long term viability of the PARCC test. Some of the sample items that have been released to the public are so difficult that they border on downright unfair. For the most dedicators math educators, there was actually a pre-conference today. I hadn’t planned on posting about that, but something came up this morning that I couldn’t pass up.

TI-84 StudyCard app

Just wanted to write a quick post about the StudyCard app for the TI-83 plus and TI-84 plus. Got some inquiries about ACT and SAT StudyCards after I wrote The Top 6 TI-84 Plus Apps, and I wanted to talk a little bit more about the app. There are so many possibilities with the StudyCard app it could make your head spin. To review, the app basically turns your TI-84 into a virtual flash card computer.

Kaplan is one of the best known names in test prep classes for getting students the extra ACT and SAT practice they need. What is probably less known is that Kaplan now offers online test prep in addition to the traditional classroom courses that they have offered for decades.
