Lately, I’ve noticed people searching TPM for information about Math Tutor DVD. I try to respond to what readers are looking for, so I wanted to get a Math Tutor DVD review up. Frankly, I didn’t know much about it, so I had to do my homework. I had heard it was a popular math video series with homeschoolers, but I didn’t know much more than that. Turns out that Math Tutor DVD is a no frills but well constructed award winning tutoring DVD series on a huge variety of math and science topics.

The DVD series was created by Jason Gibson, who has several degrees in electrical engineering and physics. I actually started in engineering before I changed my major to math my sophomore year of college, and I can tell you that Jason took a lot of math in the process of earning those degrees.  He has a laid back style and likes to use the white board during his lessons, so they are great for visual learners.

A typical video involves Jason introducing a topic, relating it to previous material, and then working examples while explaining the new material. It reminds me a lot of how I try to teach my classes.  Jason is easy to understand and I like his laid back approach.  Fortunately, you don’t have to buy from the Math Tutor DVD series without trying it out first. There’s an entire Youtube channel devoted to these videos so you can experience what the lessons are like. Here’s a fairly simple example video about adding and subtracting fractions.

Of course, many of the tutoring DVD’s are about more complicated math. Every high school math class is covered, Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Trigonometry, and Pre-Calculus.  There are also Mental Math DVD’s as well as Calculus DVD’s, Statistics, and Differential Equations. You can tell Jason hasn’t lost a step on his college coursework in engineering because he also has put together video series on advanced Chemistry and Physics.

Another thing I really appreciate about Math Tutor DVD is that Jason has put together an entire series of DVD’s about graphing calculators. Obviously, with the number of videos I’ve been uploading to Tech Powered Math, I consider this to be very important. I just can’t stress enough how important it is to know your calculator inside in out in challenging math courses. If you know your TI-89 well, you can go from average to good or from good to great.  Math Tutor DVD’s about graphing calculators are videos for the TI-89 Titanium, TI-83 and TI-84 plus, and HP-50G.

Bottom Line Math Tutor DVD Review

Math Tutor DVD’s are competitively priced. If you are a college student, a typical DVD will probably cost less than your textbook for the same class. High school level videos are even a bit cheaper. Jason also offers discount packages if you buy multiple tutoring DVD’s, which makes sense if you know you’re going to take multiple classes in a sequence (like Calculus I and Calculus II). I can also see why this option would be popular if you are homeschooling. For price and quality of the product, I can enthusiastically recommend Math Tutor DVD in this review.
