Talking Education with Mayim Bialik of “The Big Bang Theory”

The final season of the long running and widely popular sitcom, The Big Bang Theory kicks off in a little over a week on September 24, exactly 11 years after it originally debuted on CBS. This got me thinking about one of the more interesting opportunities I’ve had with this blog, a chance to interview TBBT star Mayim Bialik. At that time, I was still working as a high school math teacher, the blog was a little over a year old, and as happens from time to time, I got an email from Texas Instruments PR team.

TI-Innovator Hub Demo

I recently added a review of the TI-Innovator. I had a couple of simple demos in there, and I promised I’d show how I did them later. Here’s the first of two blog posts explaining one of those demos. This one is really simple, just playing a few notes from the original Super Mario Bros theme song using the TI-Innovator hub itself. If you are interested in doing your own experiment similar to this, it’s quite simple.

New TI-Nspire/TI-84 Tutorial Editions

With the start of the 2016-17 school year already upon us in some parts of the United States, I’ve just released new editions of my Kindle tutorial books about the TI-Nspire and TI-84 Plus. Since the TI-Nspire has seen a couple of updates to its operating system over the last couple of years and the TI-84 Plus CE has been released, I’ve wanted to do this for a while, but have struggled to find the time.

TI-84 Plus Review

Click here to see the TI-84 Plus price on eBay. Long ago and far away (in the year 2010), I did a review of the TI-84 Plus Silver Edition graphing calculator. Things have changed quite a bit during that time for Texas Instruments calculators in general and for the TI-84 Plus platform in specific. Most importantly, TI released a major new upgrade to the TI-84 Plus family, the TI-84 Plus CE, a full color display edition of the calculator designed to bring the TI-84 Plus into the next decade.

TI-Nspire NASA Activity Fuel for the Fire Launches Tomorrow

Tomorrow, Texas Instruments will add to mISSion imaginaTIon, their partnership with NASA, when they launch a new activity called “Fuel for the Fire.” TI was nice enough to give me an early preview of the Fuel for the Fire, including student and teacher handouts and the .tns file for the Nspire that makes up the bulk of the activity. This is a really rich activity that will force students to think, and offers some interesting simulations.

NASA and Texas Instruments Team Up for STEM Education

Today, Texas Instruments announced a new partnership with NASA for STEM education that they are calling mISSion imaginaTIon. The new initiative launched with an online quiz about manned space missions, and there will soon be TI-Nspire activities with mISSion imaginaTIon. A year long STEM design challenge encourages students to work on four space-related challenges, and the winner will receive a video chat with a NASA expert and a TI-Nspire CX graphing calculator.
