NCTM 2011 Annual Meeting Coverage

If you follow me on Facebook or Twitter, you know that I’ll be covering the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) 2011 Annual Meeting this week, April 13-16, in Indianapolis. I have never had the opportunity to attend the NCTM meeting before this year, and I’m excited to check out all it has to offer. NCTM’s meeting is an opportunity to catch up on the latest ideas and trends in math education while accumulating a number of those all important professional development credits necessary for recertification.

TI-Nspire OS 3.0 Released for Grayscale Nspire

After about 6 weeks of hype, TI-Nspire OS 3.0 has finally arrived. I was a bit surprised when I learned Texas Instruments was going to release OS 3.0 before the new color TI-Nspire CX was available. I suppose it could make the CX release seem a bit anticlimactic. That said, I’m glad TI went this route. I appreciate when tech companies make the product available as soon as it’s ready to go.

TI-Nspire 3.0 Science Briefing and the “TI-Nspire Way”

I recently had my second briefing about the TI-Nspire CX and Nspire OS 3.0 with Mark Fry, Texas Instruments’ product line strategy manager for the TI-Nspire. While my first briefing back in February focused on the announcement of the Nspire CX and the broad range of new capabilities coming to the Nspire line, this time Fry focused in on giving me an overview of the science capabilities of Nspire 3.

Science Tools Announced for TI-Nspire CX and OS 3.0

Texas Instruments didn’t stop with the announcement of the TI-Nspire CX. Now comes the announcement that users will have access to upgraded science tools for all TI-Nspire handhelds running OS 3.0. When the Nspire CX was announced a few weeks back, sharp eyed readers may have noticed a new icon at the bottom of the Nspire CX’s display, an Erlenmeyer flask. That addition is another new key feature, a fully dedicated app known as Vernier DataQuest, which allows users to collect data using a variety of scientific data collection devices.

Texas Instruments Strikes Back: Announces Color TI-Nspire CX

Please buy your TI-Nspire CX on Amazon . UPDATE: I have posted my TI-Nspire CX Review When I contacted Texas Instruments a few weeks back to ask about an FCC filing TI had made involving WiFi for the TI-Nspire Navigator system, I had no idea that my inquiry would lead me to a web conference with the product line strategy manager for the TI-Nspire, Mark Fry. What was being presented in the blogosphere as just an improvement to the TI-Nspire’s Navigator system turns out to be much, much more.

Texas Instruments releases new OS for TI-84, 2.55 MP

Just received an email from marketing at Texas Instruments alerting me that they released a new operating system for the TI-84 plus a couple of days ago. The newest release for the TI-84 is 2.55MP. This new TI-84 OS offers templates (or “wizards” as TI calls them) for statistics features, such as regressions and statistics. The email also said users have the ability to paste these commands back to the home screen so they can be used in other calculations.

Best Uses of Graphing Calculators

With the recent announcement of the Casio Prizm, graphing calculators have been getting publicity they don’t normally see. Gizmodo, Wired, Mashable, and many of the other major tech sites/blogs have run articles on the Prizm, and I’ve noticed a common theme in the comments on those articles. A number of people are questioning graphing calculator use. I’m somewhat used to this. On my Youtube channel, I get these same questions and comments, and on rare occasions they even come from parents of my students.

Goodbye, Father Fractal, Benoit Mandelbrot

I don’t know how many of you caught the news last week that Benoit Mandelbrot had passed away at the age of 85. If you’re like me, you probably don’t know much about Mandelbrot, but you may be familiar with fractals, and specifically, with his famous discovery, the Mandelbrot set. Fractals are mathematical structures of infinite complexity. No matter how much you zoom in on one, you will always find more structures and designs within it.
