Dell I7352-3111SLV Review

Image: BestBuy.com A few weeks ago, I had a bad experience with a member of the Lenovo Yoga 3 family. That left me on the verge of considering my first ever Mac for home use. After pricing Macs, I doubled down instead a picked up a Dell Inspiron I7352-3111SLV from BestBuy.com. As is often the case when I get my hands on a new electronics product, I thought I’d do a review of this PC for Tech Powered Math.

An Examination of Graphing Calculator Prices on Amazon

If you’re like me, you’ve noticed that prices on Amazon seem less stable than those in brick and mortar stores. There have been times I’ve visited Amazon for a specific product, noted the price, and when I checked back in two days later, the price had changed significantly. Check again a week later, and it’s different still. Until recently, this was just anecdotal for me. I wasn’t sure if what I thought was true was really true.

TI-84 Plus CE Announcement Tomorrow

UPDATE: I have posted my TI-84 Plus CE Review It’s been a couple of years since Texas Instruments has announced a significant change to one of their major graphing calculator product lines, the most recent being the addition of color to the TI-84 line with the TI-84 Plus C. Tomorrow morning, TI will officially break their silence on a big update to that same extremely popular line of calculators with a new 84, the TI-84 Plus CE.

A Plan to Deal with Bad Cell Reception

As I mentioned in a recent post, about a month ago, I made a big career change. Consequently, I’ve gone from a daily commute of 15 minutes to one of 45 minutes. My biggest frustration with the longer drive? My cell phone reception along the interstate has been spotty at best. I left cell phone contracts over a year ago and made the jump to the MVNO Straight Talk when I purchased a Nexus 5.

Responding to Good for TI…Bad for Kids and Stat

Over at R-Bloggers a few days ago day, I came across a post from Norm Matloff, professor of computer science at UC-Davis. The post, Good for TI, Good for Schools, Bad for Kids, Bad for Stat, had been reposted from his blog, the Mad (Data) Scientist. Throughout this post and the one that preceded it, Statistics: Losing Ground to CS, Image Among Students, Matloff made the case for R in the AP Statistics classroom.

Change of Leadership for Texas Instruments Calculators

New TI calculator chief Peter Balyta (left) On Friday, Texas Instruments announced a big change in leadership at the top of their calculator division. Melendy Lovett, who has been part of Texas Instruments for 20 years and has led the calculator division for a decade, is retiring. The new president of Texas Instruments’ Education Technology division is Peter Balyta. Balyta is just 43 years old but has been with Texas Instruments for 14 years, and spent all of that time within TI’s calculator division.

Dell Venue 8 Pro Unboxing Video

I actually shot this unboxing video for my new Dell Venue 8 Pro a little over a week ago, but this is the first chance I’ve had to post it. My impressions are mostly favorable, but I’ll tell you that there are definitely some adjustments making two jumps at one time, first from iOS to WIndows 8.1 and second from a 10 inch tablet to an 8 inch device. In retrospect, it probably would have been easier to only make one jump at a time.

Why My iPad’s 2nd Birthday Has Me Thinking Windows 8

It’s been a little over 2 years since I picked up my first tablet, an iPad 2, a “magical” device, as the boys in Cupertino frequently refer to it. As my wife can testify, my iPad has rarely left my side in the last during that time. Back in 2011, the appeal of my iPad was clear. It was highly portable, far more so than my laptop. It was fast, faster at what it was good at than my PC.

Nexus 5 Review for MVNO

A few weeks back, I explained why I was sacrificing my teacher discount on cell phone service to pick up a Nexus 5. In short, the Nexus 5, a high end phone with a mid-range price, allows me to buy service on a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO). These discount cell service providers resell service from one of the bigger carriers like Verizon or AT&T. Their month to month plans are much cheaper than “on contract” plans.
