On Friday, Texas Instruments announced a big change in leadership at the top of their calculator division. Melendy Lovett, who has been part of Texas Instruments for 20 years and has led the calculator division for a decade, is retiring. The new president of Texas Instruments’ Education Technology division is Peter Balyta.

Balyta is just 43 years old but has been with Texas Instruments for 14 years, and spent all of that time within TI’s calculator division. Speaking about Balyta, Rich Templeton, Texas Instrument’s CEO, said, “Peter combines a strong understanding of global markets with his earlier first-hand experience as a math educator and curriculum and instruction supervisor. He has great appreciation for educators and channel partners with whom Education Technology works to increase student achievement in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education.”

I wish Dr. Balyta the best of luck and am curious to see what direction he takes with the Education Technology division of the next few years. I imagine there must be some interesting conversations happening internally at TI about how the division might evolve over the next decade with technology in the classroom changing so rapidly right now. Exciting times, indeed.

I would also be remiss if I failed to bid a fond farewell to Melendy Lovett. I’ve had a few interactions with her since I started Tech Powered Math, and she’s been extremely gracious with me, far more than a small time blogger and high school teacher deserved. I am grateful for that and wish her the best in retirement.
