Drawing Connections with TI-Nspire Functions vs Derivatives

function vs derivative nspireRecently, I was very honored to have the opportunity to speak at a professional development day at Illinois Central College. The math department their asked me to introduce them to the TI-Nspire, as they are starting to see a significant number of their students show up with the Nspire. In addition to a basic overview of the device, I presented the ICC math department with series of activities I might use in algebra, calculus, and statistics.

I thought TPM readers might be interested in the calculus activity, which involved graphing the derivative of a function on the TI-Nspire. In my experience, there are always some students that struggle to make the graphical connections between a function and its first derivative, despite possible problem solving methods such as curve sketching, sign tables, and matching the function with a list of possible derivatives.

In this video I offer another method to add to your bag of tricks, which is the TI-Nspire’s dynamic geometry software. You can easily use its “construct perpendicular” feature to try to make clearer to students exactly where the key points are in the derivative that align to critical points in the original functions. Check out the video below for a more thorough explanation.

The TI-Nspire and Microsoft Excel

The TI-Nspire and Microsoft Excel

As I’ve mentioned a couple of times on Tech Powered Math, I’m leading the charge on our new statistics class at my school. It’s the culmination of several years of effort, including a feasibility study, search for textbooks, curriculum adoption, and now implementation. It’s very exciting and exhausting at the same time. The class isContinue Reading

TI-84+C Asymptote Detection

This isn’t at all a post I was planning to do, but again tonight I had another question on the Tech Powered Math Facebook page about the TI-84+C and asymptotes. If you press 2nd and FORMAT, you’ll find an option called “Detect Asymptotes” that can be turned on or off. The people I’ve heard fromContinue Reading

TI-Nspire Trig Formulas Document

The first formula sheet document I am releasing for the TI-Nspire is one for trigonometry formulas. There are quite a few trig identities for students to memorize, so I hope this will serve as a good reference for you. This file will work for any up-to-date version of the TI-Nspire, including CAS or non-CAS, CXContinue Reading

TI-Nspire Formula Documents

TI-Nspire Formula Documents

Over the next few weeks, I’m going to be releasing a series of TI-Nspire formula “cheat sheets.” Of course, cheat sheet is just a nickname for this kind of document, don’t actually use them to cheat. Having the formulas on your graphing calculator can serve as a very valuable study guide when you are eitherContinue Reading

Math Nspired update includes Algebra II, Calculus

Texas Instruments today announced a significant update for their Math Nspired website. If you’re not familiar with Math Nspired, it’s a resource site for the TI-Nspire, primarily for math teachers, but to a lesser extent for students.Continue Reading
