Continuing with my profile of Jason Gibson’s Math Tutor DVD series, this post outlines the highlights of his Algebra DVD’s. There are actually several Algebra DVD courses in the Math Tutor DVD series: Algebra I, Algebra II, Advanced Algebra, and Matrix Algebra, which a lot of schools call Linear Algebra.

MathTutorDVD.com’s Spectrum of Algebra DVD Courses

That’s quite a range of courses. Algebra I is taken by most students as early as eighth grade or freshman year of high school, while Matrix Algebra is a common topic in college math classes. Needless to say, a wide variety of math tutoring situations are covered by these DVD’s. Algebra I can be tough for students because for a lot of them, it’s a big jump in the abstractness of mathematics. To this point, they may have had the misconception that math is nothing more than numbers, and now they are faced with variables. Linear Algebra can throw students for a loop as well, given the large number of steps and calculations necessary to solve many problems.

The Algebra I DVD covers the basics of what you’d expect in a first year algebra course like solving linear equations, graphing lines, and factoring. The Algebra II DVD has some overlap with Algebra I but moves into more advanced topics like solving 3-variable systems of equations, radicals, and fractional exponents. The Advanced Algebra DVD has a lot of material that could also be consider Pre-Calculus, like inverse functions, sequences and series, and the binomial theorem. However, Jason also has a Pre-Calculus DVD out, so be sure to check your syllabus to see what lines up better (or buy them both in one of his package deals). Lastly, the Matrix Algebra DVD covers most of what you’d expect to find in a linear algebra class, including adding, subtracting, and multiplying matrices, the Gauss Jordan method, inverses of matrices, and Cramer’s Rule.
